Breast Implant Surgery or Breast Augmentation

Breast Implant Surgery or Breast Augmentation

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, more commonly referred to as breast implants, is for women who want to increase the size or refine the shape of their breasts.  Motivating factors can include post mastectomy reconstruction, weight loss and pregnancy. A breast augmentation will only increase the size of breasts through the use of implants. Other procedures will reduce the size of breasts or improve sagging breasts.

The Procedure

This procedure is performed under general anaesthetic. A short incision is made usually in the crease line under the breast but alternatively the implant can be inserted through an incision at the lower edge of the areola, or under the armpit. The scars will not be very noticeable. The way the incision is made and its length depends on the physique of the patient as well as the type of implants the patient requires. Once the incision is made, the appropriate pocket will be placed right behind the breast tissue. The SAFEST choice of breast implants is saline implants, which are filled with salt water. There are also silicone implants, which are filled with silicone gel. Some sensation in the nipple can be lost as a result of the procedure. Note that breastfeeding is not adversely affected in any way.

Should I do it?

This procedure is definitely something you should consider if you have ever felt that your breasts are simply not the size or shape that you want them to be. Wouldn’t you love to look in the mirror and be satisfied with the way your breasts look? This procedure could be for you!
